Last year was a surprisingly busy one with a number of major sporting events such as the Tokyo Olympics and the UEFA Euro. In this post, we’ll recap some of last year’s most noteworthy sporting events and take a look at what some of the world’s top athletes have planned for this coming year.
Australia: Ash Barty
Ash Barty is not only one of Australia’s best sportspeople of 2021 but also one of the best athletes in the world. Her success last year took her to the top ten of the greatest tennis players of all time. She’s been on a great streak with many success during tournaments and she won a total of five titles throughout 2021.
At the French Open, she had to withdraw from the tournament due to a hip injury. However, her fighting spirit helped her to overcome the injury. Soon Ash won Wimbledon 2021 after a remarkable comeback. As a result, for the third year in a row she was crowned as world Number One by the Women’s Tennis Association. Second, Ash announced that she would soon marry Australian golfer Harry Kissick. Now she is focused on the Australian Open, which begins in January 2022 at Melbourne Park. Ash Barty even refused to attend the year-end WTA Finals in Mexico. Instead of that she has chosen to stay at home and prepare for the Australian Open.
Canada: Adam Henrique
Canada is considered one of the top 10 sports nations in the world, and for good reason. This year, Canada’s national team won IIHF World Championship for the first time since 2016 and became 27-time World Champion. This happened despite the fact that Canada started the tournament with three defeats in a row – from Latvia, the USA, and Germany. Due to these initial defeats the Canadians could have missed the playoffs. However, Canada reached the final, stopping two sworn hockey enemies – the Russians and the Americans – in the playoffs. In 10 games of this dramatic tournament, Adam Henrique earned 11 points with 6 goals.
Italy: Gianluigi Donnarumma
The Italian national team delighted football fans with the victory at Euro 2020. Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was selected as the best player of the tournament. The new Italian star is only 22 years old, but he has already played 27 caps for the national team. He has never conceded more than one goal in the national team per game. And in 16 matches Donnarumma managed to not miss a single goal.
Serbia: Novak Djokovic
Serbia is not among the top 10 countries on the Global Cup rating in a variety of sports. However, it possesses 7th position on the Per Capita Cup scale. One of Serbia’s top remarkable athletes is tennis player Novak Djokovic. This year he won the 134th Wimbledon Championship. Like his main competitors over the past decade, now he also has 20 victories at the Grand Slam tennis tournaments. In 2021, Djokovic was the highest-paid tennis player in the world. The Serbian athlete also was going to take part in the 2022 Australian Open. However, now his participation in the tournament is under question because of his attitude toward vaccines.
USA: Allyson Felix
Among top athletes in the USA, Allyson Felix is one of the most well-known track and field athletes in the world. The most titled athlete in Olympic and world championship history has won 11 Olympic medals (7 gold, 3 silver, 1 bronze) and 18 world championship awards. In relation to 2022 year Felix is still making an important decision on whether to continue competing for another year or just retire.
